Our Story

The Ampersand Café is a place to gather with friends, new and old, to enjoy a locally sourced baked good, made just the way you like it, and to sip a hand-crafted hot drink, while dipping into a good book. We’re a proud social enterprise managed by MetroWorks — building our community by helping people overcome barriers to employment with programs that offer work and life skills, and on the job training.

The Ampersand Café is proof that social impact doesn’t need to come at the expense of quality — we can have our community-minded, locally sourced-muffins… and eat them, too. In partnership with our sister company, Stone Hearth Bakery, we cater to the hearts, souls, and tastebuds of Haligonians with fresh baked goods made daily for the café.

Proud Partners

We’re excited to bring you the best local products and producers whenever possible. Our coffee is a custom blend from the Annapolis Valley's Nova Coffee, and pairs nicely with our other treat-making partners Delectable Desserts, and Schoolhouse Gluten-Free Gourmet. We also offer authentic Arabic and Turkish coffee from Roasted Coffee. We’re even local from the ground up, growing the sweet greens for our salads at Common Roots Urban Farms. We’re “for local, with local” and proud to work with our amazing partner, Halifax Public Libraries.
